Keeping Your Pet Cool in the Summer

Ahh, the heat of summer is finally upon us. As the weather gets hotter, sometimes people forget that dogs aren’t immune to the hazards of the summer. Without sweat gland, dogs can overheat quickly. To ensure you have a happy, health summer with your pet, here are some suggestions for keeping ‘Rover’ cool.

  • Ensure access to clean, fresh water at all times and in all places. Don’t forget to top it up regularly and keep in a shaded area if outside.
  • If traveling, don’t forget to take the sealable bowl for water on the car ride.
  • Dog’s need to be protected from the sun if outside all day. Ensure Rover has a shaded area to rest in.
  • Your children’s plastic wading pool or a running sprinkler is great cool respites for your pet from the beaming sun. Fill it up and move it to a shaded area.
  • Try not to walk your dog during the hottest times of the day (10-4). As temperatures rise, pavement and other surfaces get hotter. Any hot surface can burn your pet’s paws. If you must walk your dog in the heat, ensure there is grass around for him to walk on.
  • NEVER leaver your dog unattended in a hot car! This is a big No-No! If you must bring Rover along for errands, ensure you keep the air conditioning running while he is in the car and always a window open for fresh air. Temperatures can reach fatal levels in the interior of a car.
  • Watch your dog for signs of heat stroke or heat exhaustion. Signs that your pet might be suffering from either are; labored breathing, excessive panting, extreme fatigue and possible collapse. GET YOUR DOG COOLED DOWN FAST. Wet towels, water source, shaded area...

With attention to these tips you and Rover can enjoy a fully active summer, staying cool.
