We want a visit to the park to be enjoyable for everyone. A good mannered dog that is respectful of you, others and the environment is part of a successful visit. Being off leash is a privilege that your dog should earn. With many families and some with children your dog should know the basic commands before venturing off to the of leash park, such a sit, down, stay, stop, and come.
Dogs are social animals and enjoy interacting with other dogs and people. Dog communicate with one another through a series of facial expressions, ear, tail, head positions, eye and mouth positions. This language is quick and often missed by most humans. Just like humans, not all dogs are good at speaking or reading their own language. Miscommunications happen every day. Understanding how to read dogs is your best strategy in an enjoyable visit at the park.
Animal language is very complex as each signal operates independently of each other. By this we mean dogs use combination of body language and sounds to communicate their state of mind to the other dogs and people. When watching your dog interact, look at the whole interaction watch the ears, tail, head, body moments and sounds, in relations to all others involved. Watch the other owners as well, what kind of leashed collars, toys treats, leadership they are using. This can help you understand where their control level is with their own dog. At the park you are venerable to any kind of situating as a combination of genetics, learned behavior and poor socialization plays a part too.
By being aware of all factors you can prevent problems before they occur, providing a safe enjoyable day for everyone. You cannot control other people's dogs but you certainly should be able to control your own. |
Touching Story
I heard a great story this week and wanted to pass it on. One of the dogs who has been coming to the shop for many years, was starting to go blind and loose some teeth. Noticing this, the owners thought they would get another dog to take care of him. They found a new puppy. Older dogs do not always take to pups, but these two took to one and other right away. As their friendship grew the younger one noticed the older dog was having trouble eating as he had lost so many teeth. The younger dog now pre chews all the food for the older dog while they eat. This touched my heart so much that I wanted to share it with you all. |
